Two Jyotirlingas from Indore

Indore–Ujjain–Omkareshwar Tour: Itinerary, Distances & Cost

Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in 1–4 days, with Maheshwar and Mandu add-ons, planned by an Indore agency since 2014.

  • Updated 8 Oct 2026
  • 13 min read

Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar) and Omkareshwar are Madhya Pradesh’s two Jyotirlingas. They are about 135 km apart by road, with Indore roughly in the middle, so most travellers base an Ujjain–Omkareshwar tour there. Two days with one night in Ujjain is the comfortable minimum if you hold a Bhasma Aarti slot; a third or fourth day adds Maheshwar and Mandu. Below, our Indore travel desk sets out the distances, 1–4 day itineraries, taxi and bus fares, and what the trip costs.

The two Jyotirlingas in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has two Jyotirlingas, and both are an easy drive from Indore:

  • Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain: the temple of Mahakal, now approached through the Mahakal Lok corridor. Its 4:00 AM Bhasma Aarti is the ritual most itineraries are built around. Our Ujjain and Mahakal darshan guide covers timings and places to visit in Ujjain.
  • Omkareshwar, Khandwa district: on Mandhata island in the Narmada, an island said to be shaped like ॐ. You cross to the temple on foot over the 235 m Mamleshwar Setu or the older Jhula Pul, as no vehicles are allowed on the island. Our Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga guide has the temple timings and the parikrama.

Opposite Omkareshwar, on the south bank, Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar) is also venerated, and many pilgrims visit both. Every Omkareshwar day in the itineraries below leaves time for Mamleshwar.

Ujjain to Omkareshwar distance and route

The Ujjain to Omkareshwar distance is about 135 km by road. Our routing on OpenStreetMap gives 134 km temple to temple; published figures run from 135 to 140 km, and the straight-line distance is about 105 km. Allow 3–3.5 hours. Every Ujjain–Omkareshwar drive passes through or around Indore and then follows the Indore–Khandwa road (NH-347BG) south over the Simrol ghat.

Distances computed on 8 Oct 2026 with the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data (temple to temple), cross-checked against the Omkareshwar temple trust, MP Tourism and cab-operator figures. Drive times are our estimates, allowing for traffic, ghat roadworks and temple-town parking.

Road-works note (Oct 2026): a 33.4 km four-lane section with three tunnels (Bherughat, Baigram and Choral) is being built on the Indore–Khandwa road between Tejaji Nagar and Balwada. It was reported 86–88% complete in April–May 2026 with a December 2026 target, and officials say Indore → Omkareshwar will then take “about 1 hour”. We could not confirm its opening status for this update, so plan on the slower times above and expect slowdowns near Talai Naka and Baigram. Sources: Patrika, The Tribune.

Where to go first, Ujjain or Omkareshwar?

  • Ujjain first if you hold a Bhasma Aarti slot. The aarti starts at 4:00 AM and you report well before it, so you need a night in Ujjain. The alternative is leaving Indore at about 1:30–2:00 AM.
  • No slot? End nearest your exit. Finish with Omkareshwar (or Maheshwar and Mandu) if you fly out of Indore; finish with Ujjain if your train leaves from Ujjain Junction.
  • Adding Maheshwar and Mandu? Go Ujjain → Omkareshwar → Maheshwar → Mandu → Indore. It is a one-way loop with no road driven twice, the same order MP Tourism uses for its Malwa tour.

Can you do Ujjain and Omkareshwar in one day?

Yes, if you skip the Bhasma Aarti. From Indore it is a loop of about 270 km (57 + 134 + 78 km) with 6–7 hours of driving plus temple queues, which makes a 13–14 hour day. The 1-day Twin Jyotirlinga plan below has the timings. We do not recommend it for elderly travellers, or on Mondays, Sawan days or Mahashivratri.

With the Bhasma Aarti it is possible but punishing. You leave Indore around 1:30 AM, attend the aarti from 4:00 to 6:00 AM, leave Ujjain at about 7:00 AM, reach Omkareshwar by about 10:30 AM and get back to Indore around 4:00–5:00 PM. We suggest it only for fit adults; for most families, two days with a night in Ujjain is the better plan.

Indore–Ujjain–Omkareshwar itinerary: 1, 2, 3 and 4 days

Every plan below starts and ends in Indore, uses a private car, and follows Mahakal’s winter (Kartik–Phalgun, roughly October–March) schedule. From about April to October, Mahakal’s morning and evening aartis move by about 30 minutes; see the timings table under what to book before you go.

1-day Ujjain darshan from Indore

The simplest trip covers about 130–150 km in 10–12 hours, with general darshan at Mahakal and the main Ujjain temples. A paid Sheeghra (fast-queue) ticket shortens the Mahakal queue.

2-day Ujjain–Omkareshwar itinerary (with Bhasma Aarti)

This is the plan we suggest to most pilgrims. A night near Mahakal Lok puts you close to the temple for the 4:00 AM aarti, and the long drive to Omkareshwar happens after breakfast.

2 days / 1 night: Ujjain (Bhasma Aarti) and Omkareshwar
Day and timePlan
Day 1, 11:00 AMPickup at Indore airport or railway station; drive 57 km to Ujjain

Day 2, 4:00–6:00 AMBhasma Aarti; then rest, breakfast and check out by 8:30 AM
Day 2, 12:00 PMReach Omkareshwar (134 km); lunch during the bhog closure
Day 2, 1:15–3:30 PMOmkareshwar and Mamleshwar darshan
Day 2, 4:00 PMLeave for Indore; drop at the airport or station by about 6:30 PM

About 270 km of driving. Book an onward flight from Indore after 8:00 PM. Timings last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the Mahakal and Omkareshwar official sites.

No Bhasma Aarti slot? Reverse it. Day 1 is Indore → Omkareshwar (sleep there or back in Indore), and Day 2 is Ujjain, ending at Ujjain Junction or Indore.

3 days: add Maheshwar

Maheshwar is 66 km from Omkareshwar via Barwaha, 1 h 15 m – 2 h by road. The town sits on the north bank of the Narmada and was the Holkar capital until 1818; Ahilyabai Holkar shaped its riverfront in the late 18th century. Half a day covers Ahilya Fort, the Rajwada, the long ghats and a boat ride. Maheshwari handloom sarees are woven here, and the Rehwa Society, founded in 1979, has about 130 weavers. Our Maheshwar travel guide has more.

Day 2Bhasma Aarti 4:00–6:00 AM. Leave at 8:30 AM for Omkareshwar (134 km); Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar darshan after the 12:20–1:15 PM bhog closure. Evening ghat aarti and a boat ride round Mandhata islandOmkareshwar, or drive 66 km to sleep in Maheshwar
Day 38:00 AM to Maheshwar (66 km, about 1.5 h): Ahilya Fort, Rajwada, ghats, boat ride and the Rehwa Society looms. Lunch, then leave at 2:00 PM for Indore (95 km, about 2 h). Optional Indore stops from 4:30 PM: Lal Bagh Palace, Rajwada, Khajrana Ganesh, and Sarafa night food market after 8:00 PMDrop-off in Indore

About 370 km of driving in total (8 Oct 2026 estimate). MP Tourism’s own 3-day Jyotirlinga tour uses an Omkareshwar or Maheshwar night in the same way.

4 days: add Mandu

Mandu (Mandav) is a fortified plateau town in Dhar district, about 633 m up on the Vindhyas and once the capital of the Malwa Sultanate. Jahaz Mahal stands between two artificial lakes, so it seems to float when they are full. Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, an early marble tomb often called a model for the Taj Mahal, and Rani Roopmati’s Pavilion, looking toward the Narmada, fill out the day. Mandu is at its best in the monsoon. See our Mandu travel guide.

DayPlanNight
Day 1Indore → Ujjain. Temple circuit and Sandhya AartiUjjain
Day 2Bhasma Aarti → Omkareshwar (134 km) for Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar darshan → evening aarti on the NarmadaOmkareshwar
Day 3Omkareshwar → Maheshwar (66 km). Fort, ghats, looms and a sunset boat rideMaheshwar
Day 4Leave 8:30 AM for Mandu (42–50 km). 10:00 AM Royal Enclave: Jahaz Mahal and Hindola Mahal. 12:00 PM Hoshang Shah’s Tomb and Jami Masjid, then lunch. 2:00 PM Rewa Kund, Baz Bahadur’s Palace, Rani Roopmati’s Pavilion. 4:00 PM leave for Indore (92 km); drop at the airport or station around 6:30 PMDrop-off in Indore

About 470 km of driving (8 Oct 2026 estimate). In July–September, add a night in Mandu to make it 5 days / 4 nights, as MP Tourism’s Malwa tour does; monsoon paths get slippery.

Ujjain Omkareshwar tour package cost

The table below shows the market, not our price list. We compiled it on 8 Oct 2026 from published packages so you can tell a fair quote from an inflated one. Read every quote carefully: some are per person (usually twin sharing, with hotels), others per vehicle (car and driver only).

Market range (Oct 2026): Ujjain–Omkareshwar tour cost from Indore. These are not Traverse prices.
TripBudget (group tour or basic stay)Mid-range (private car, 3★ hotel, 2 people)Upper (4★ hotel, guide, 2 people)

5 days / 4 nights (full Malwa loop)Too few published examples₹19,000–26,000 per person₹26,000–30,000 per person

Market range compiled 8 Oct 2026 from MP Tourism’s published tour PDFs, MakeMyTrip, Holidify, travelaajkal, Thunder Holidays and ujjaindarshan.com, plus published cab rates. Per-person prices assume twin sharing and exclude flights and trains. *The 2-day mid-range figure is our inference from 3-day and cab rates, as few 2-day packages are published. None of these are Traverse prices.

What moves the price:

  • Car type and group size. In MP Tourism’s published rates, moving from 2 people in an AC sedan to 6 in an Innova Crysta cuts the per-person price by about 25% (₹10,499 → ₹7,799 on its 3-day Jyotirlinga tour). Groups of 10 or more save further in a tempo traveller.
  • Hotel class. On that same tour, 4★ costs ₹1,100–2,300 more per person than 3★, depending on group size.
  • Dates. MP Tourism’s published packages do not apply at Diwali or on long weekends, so ask for a fresh quote for those dates. Mondays in Sawan and Mahashivratri bring the biggest crowds.
  • Headline “from” prices. One operator’s “from ₹3,500” applies only to groups of 31 or more; the same trip is ₹11,500 per person for a solo traveller. Always ask what the headline assumes.
  • Bhasma Aarti. The official pass is ₹200 per person, booked only on the official website. If a quote bundles Bhasma Aarti, ask exactly what you are paying for.

Our price. Traverse runs these trips from Indore as private, made-to-order tours, so we quote each trip rather than list fixed packages here. Send us your dates, group size, hotel preference and whether you hold a Bhasma Aarti slot. Our quote will say clearly whether it is per vehicle or per person, and what it includes.

Ujjain–Omkareshwar taxi and bus fares from Indore

Most families do this circuit by private car. Taxi fares below are per vehicle and usually exclude tolls, parking and GST. For multi-day hires, operators bill at least 250 km a day plus a driver allowance of about ₹300–500 per day or night.

Last checked 8 Oct 2026 against Uber Intercity, Savaari, CabBazar, MakeMyTrip and Ujjain operators’ published rate cards. Ola and inDrive publish no route fares, so check in the app. Rows marked “estimate” are our arithmetic, not quotes. Some operators’ own pages disagree with each other, which is why a few ranges are wide.

For a 3-day loop (Indore → Ujjain → Omkareshwar → Maheshwar → Indore), you drive about 370–400 km but are billed the 750 km three-day minimum. At published per-km rates, plus driver allowance and tolls, that works out to roughly ₹9,500–11,500 for a sedan or ₹13,000–15,000 for an Innova Crysta. This is our arithmetic from public rates, not a quote.

Last checked 8 Oct 2026 on redBus, AbhiBus, via.com and ixigo. Sources disagree on Ujjain–Omkareshwar departure times, so confirm the day before. The Omkareshwar temple trust also lists Mortakka bus stand, 12 km away, with buses to Indore, Ujjain, Khargone and Khandwa.

Bus or taxi? The bus is far cheaper. A car is up to 40 minutes quicker from Indore to Omkareshwar and about an hour quicker from Ujjain, and it waits while you queue. For seniors, or anyone pairing the circuit with a 4:00 AM aarti, the car is worth it.

Bhasma Aarti and darshan: what to book before you go

Mahakal’s Bhasma Aarti is booked only on the official Mahakaleshwar website, and the pass costs ₹200 per person. Regular slots open at 8:00 AM on the 1st of the previous month (June slots open on 1 May), and Tatkal opens at 8:00 AM the day before. On the day, carry the original photo ID you booked with. The temple helpdesk is 1800-233-1008. For the step-by-step process, see our Mahakal Bhasma Aarti booking guide.

We never sell or resell Bhasma Aarti or darshan passes. In June 2026, Aaj Tak reported that touts in Ujjain were caught selling the ₹200 pass for ₹2,500. An FIR followed, and officials urged devotees to book only on the official website. If anyone offers you a “guaranteed” pass for extra money, walk away. You book the slot yourself on the official portal, and we plan the car, hotel and timings around it.

For ordinary darshan, both temples have paid fast-queue tickets. Omkareshwar’s Shighra Darshan costs ₹300, per the Omkareshwar temple trust website. Mahakal’s Sheeghra darshan ticket is widely reported at ₹250, but we could not confirm that fee on the official site, so check it there before you go.

Best time to visit Ujjain and Omkareshwar

  • October–March is the most comfortable window for the whole circuit, and the one we suggest for senior citizens.
  • Crowds: Mondays in Sawan and Mahashivratri bring the biggest crowds at both Jyotirlingas. Avoid the 1-day double on those dates.
  • Monsoon (July–September): Mandu is at its best, as the plateau turns green and the lakes around Jahaz Mahal fill, though paths get slippery. Winter (October–February) is the alternative.
  • Simhastha 2028: Ujjain’s Kumbh is reported for roughly 27 March to 27 May 2028, but no official calendar exists yet. If you plan to go, plan early; our Simhastha 2028 guide tracks the dates. For the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Kumbh, see Kumbh Mela 2026.

Why plan with an Indore-based agency

Traverse has run its travel desk from Indore since 2014. Indore sits between the two Jyotirlingas, so we start and end these trips here, at your hotel, the airport or the railway station.

  • Clear pricing. Our quote says whether it is per vehicle or per person, and what it includes.
  • No pass reselling. We never sell or resell Bhasma Aarti or darshan passes, and we do not promise “VIP darshan”. We plan around the slot you book on the official portal.
  • Plans built on the real timetables. We work around Mahakal’s aarti times, Omkareshwar’s bhog closure and the Indore–Khandwa roadworks, and we will tell you when a plan is too much for older travellers.
  • Easy extensions. Add Maheshwar, Mandu or an evening in Indore (Rajwada, Sarafa) without backtracking.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does an Ujjain–Omkareshwar tour package cost from Indore?

About ₹5,000–7,000 per person for a mid-range 2-day trip and ₹6,500–10,500 per person for 3 days with Maheshwar, twin sharing, going by October 2026 market rates. A private sedan alone costs about ₹2,500–4,000 per vehicle for a day. These are market ranges, not Traverse prices; we quote each trip on your dates, group size and hotel class.

  • What is the distance from Ujjain to Omkareshwar?

About 135 km by road. OpenStreetMap routing gives 134 km temple to temple, and published figures range from 135 to 140 km depending on the route. The drive takes 3–3.5 hours, because every route passes through or around Indore and then crosses the Simrol ghat on the Indore–Khandwa road. The straight-line distance is about 105 km.

  • Can we do Ujjain and Omkareshwar in one day?

Yes, if you skip the Bhasma Aarti. From Indore the loop is about 270 km, with 6–7 hours of driving plus queues, so expect a 13–14 hour day: leave at 5:00 AM, Mahakal darshan from 6:15 AM, Omkareshwar by noon, and back in Indore by about 7:00 PM. It does not suit elderly travellers, or Mondays, Sawan days and Mahashivratri.

  • Which should we visit first, Ujjain or Omkareshwar?

Visit Ujjain first if you have a Bhasma Aarti slot, because the aarti starts at 4:00 AM and you need a night in Ujjain. Without a slot, choose the order that ends nearest your exit: finish at Omkareshwar or Maheshwar if you fly out of Indore, or at Ujjain if your train leaves from Ujjain Junction.

  • How many days are needed for Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Indore?

Two days and one night is the comfortable minimum for both Jyotirlingas with the Bhasma Aarti. Take three days to add Maheshwar or an evening in Indore, and four days to complete the loop through Maheshwar and Mandu without backtracking. A single day works only for fit adults who skip the Bhasma Aarti and start at 5:00 AM.

  • What is the taxi fare for an Ujjain to Omkareshwar round trip?

A same-day sedan round trip from Ujjain to Omkareshwar costs about ₹3,600–6,500, depending on the operator and whether tolls are included. An Ertiga costs about ₹4,200–4,500 and an Innova Crysta about ₹5,500–6,000. One way, Ujjain operators charge about ₹3,000–4,000 for a sedan. These are October 2026 market rates per vehicle, not Traverse quotes.

  • What is the bus fare from Ujjain to Omkareshwar?

Bus fares from Ujjain to Omkareshwar start at about ₹189–200 per person, and AC buses from about ₹260. The trip takes about 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 25 minutes over roughly 135 km. About 25 direct buses run daily, the first at 4:30 AM, from Ujjain Bus Depot, Nanakheda or Hari Fatak. Sources disagree on timings, so confirm the day before.

  • How do I book the Bhasma Aarti, and can a travel agent book it for me?

Book it yourself, only on the official Mahakaleshwar website; the pass costs ₹200 per person. Regular slots open at 8:00 AM on the 1st of the previous month, and Tatkal at 8:00 AM the day before. In June 2026, touts were caught reselling passes for ₹2,500 and an FIR followed. Traverse never sells passes; we plan your trip around your slot.

  • How many Jyotirlingas are there in Madhya Pradesh?

Madhya Pradesh has two Jyotirlingas: Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, and Omkareshwar on Mandhata island in the Narmada, in Khandwa district. They are about 135 km apart with Indore between them, which makes Indore the natural base. Mamleshwar, on the south bank opposite Omkareshwar, is also venerated, and many pilgrims visit it on the same trip.

  • What is the distance from Omkareshwar to Maheshwar?

About 66 km by road via Barwaha, which takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours; some sources give 70 km. A sedan costs about ₹1,500 one way. Maheshwar fits neatly into a 3-day circuit: Bhasma Aarti and Omkareshwar on day two, then Maheshwar’s fort and ghats on day three before the 95 km drive back to Indore.

  • Is Maheshwar worth adding, and what is it famous for?

Yes, if you have half a day. Maheshwar, on the north bank of the Narmada, was the Holkar capital until 1818, and Ahilyabai Holkar shaped its riverfront. People come for Ahilya Fort, the long ghats with temples and boat rides, and Maheshwari handloom sarees, woven by groups such as the Rehwa Society. It is 66 km from Omkareshwar.

  • Is a taxi or a bus better from Indore to Omkareshwar?

A taxi is better for families and seniors; the bus suits tight budgets. A sedan costs about ₹1,300–1,800 one way and takes 2–2.5 hours while the Simrol ghat roadworks continue. Buses start at about ₹120 (AC from ₹225), take about 2 hours 40 minutes, and stop at Omkareshwar New Bus Stand. About 53 buses run daily.

  • What is the best time to visit Ujjain and Omkareshwar?

October to March is the most comfortable time for the full circuit. Expect the biggest crowds on Mondays in Sawan and at Mahashivratri. If you are adding Mandu, the monsoon from July to September is when the plateau is greenest and its lakes fill. Ujjain’s Simhastha Kumbh is expected around March–May 2028, though no official calendar exists yet.

  • Which is the nearest airport and railway station?

Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is the nearest airport for both temples: about 62 km from Mahakal in Ujjain and about 77 km from Omkareshwar. For trains, Ujjain Junction serves Mahakal. For Omkareshwar, Sanawad station is 12 km away and Khandwa Junction 72 km away, according to the Omkareshwar temple trust.
