Mahakal darshan timings and fees, Mahakal Lok, 14 places sorted by distance from the temple, and how to get here from Indore, from our travel desk 55 km away.

  • Updated 8 Oct 2026
  • 20 min read

Ujjain is about 55 km from our travel desk in Indore, close enough for a day trip by cab or the early Vande Bharat. This guide from Traverse's Indore team (est. 2014) covers the practical side of a visit: Mahakal darshan timings and fees, the official aarti schedule, Mahakal Lok, 14 places to visit in Ujjain sorted by distance from the temple, 1-day and 2-day itineraries, and how to get here from Indore. We checked fees and timings against the official temple website on 8 Oct 2026. Temple booking rules changed in April and June 2026, so confirm on the portal before you travel.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: what to know before you go

Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga has three levels. The Mahakal Jyotirlinga is on the lowest, the Omkareshwar Shivalinga sits above it, and the Nagchandreshwar shrine on the top level opens only once a year, on Nag Panchami. According to the official temple website, the present structure dates from the fourth decade of the 18th century and blends Bhoomija, Chalukya and Maratha styles. The campus holds 53 temples in all.

General darshan is free and needs no booking. Fast-track darshan, the two evening aartis, pujas and the temple guesthouse are all booked online. The temple committee also runs an Annakshetra that serves free meals.

Mahakal temple timings and daily aarti schedule

The temple follows two schedules set by the Hindu calendar. "Summer" runs from Chaitra Krishna Pratipada to Ashwin Purnima, and "winter" from Kartik Krishna Pratipada to Phalgun Purnima. The Dadyodak, Bhog and Sandhya Aartis move by 30 minutes between them; Bhasma and Shayan Aartis stay the same all year.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the official timing page. Shravan has special early hours (see below).

When do winter timings start in 2026? The switch falls on Kartik Krishna Pratipada, which we expect around 27 Oct 2026. We worked that date out from the Hindu calendar; the temple has not announced it, so check the official site that week. Some blogs say Bhasma Aarti moves to 4:30 AM in winter, but the official table keeps it at 4:00 AM.

General darshan hours. The temple does not publish a single opening and closing time. In practice, darshan runs from the end of Bhasma Aarti (about 6:00 AM) to Shayan Aarti (about 10:30 PM). Darshan pauses around Sandhya Aarti, and the official fast-track slots skip that window.

Shravan is different. In 2026, from 30 Jul to 7 Sep, the doors opened at 3:00 AM and Bhasma Aarti ran from 3:00 to 5:00 AM; on Mondays the doors opened at 2:30 AM. Regular timings resumed on 8 Sep (Free Press Journal). The 2027 dates are not yet published.

Mahakal darshan options and prices

Everything except general darshan is booked online through the official services page, and pujas through the pujan booking page. Here is what each option costs and when booking opens.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the official temple portal. The Sandhya and Shayan Aarti fee is from a Navbharat Live report, so confirm it at checkout. Rates and routes can change without notice.

Can you enter the sanctum? Usually not. The garbhagriha has generally been closed to general devotees since 2023, with VIP access at the Collector's discretion. We could not confirm its current status or any fee, so treat websites that quote a sanctum fee with caution.

Mahakal live darshan and helpline

If you cannot travel, or missed out on an aarti booking, the temple streams darshan on its official live darshan page and on the YouTube channel @shrimahakaleshwarjyotirlingamm, which the official site links to.

For booking problems or refunds, the temple helpdesk is on 1800-233-1008 (toll-free), 0734-2550563 and 0734-2559277, or email office@mahakaleshwar.nic.in.

Mahakal temple rules: phones, garlands and dress

  • Phones: banned or restricted inside the temple, and photography near the sanctum is not allowed. Reports differ on when the rule began, so assume you cannot use a phone inside.
  • Garlands: since 1 Jan 2026, garlands heavier than 10 kg are not offered inside the sanctum (Patrika).
  • Dress: a dhoti or sola for men and a saree for women are reported as required for Bhasma Aarti and sanctum entry. We could not find this rule in the 2026 portal text, so check before you go.

Bhasma Aarti in brief

Bhasma Aarti is the first of Mahakal's five daily aartis, held from 4:00 to 6:00 AM in both summer and winter (earlier during Shravan). Unlike general darshan, you need a booking to sit in for it. Since 9 Apr 2026, permission is issued online only on the official temple website, and the free offline counter has closed. The fee is ₹200 per person, and each devotee needs an Aadhaar card or passport.

There are only about 1,700–2,500 seats a day, so slots book out fast. If you miss out, you can still watch the aarti on the temple's live stream.

Planning to attend? Our Mahakal Bhasma Aarti booking guide explains when the regular and Tatkal windows open, the request limits, the ID and photo rules, the dress code and how to avoid touts. Traverse does not sell aarti passes, and anyone charging more than ₹200 for one is not the temple.

Mahakal Lok: entry fee, timings and what to see

Mahakal Lok (officially Mahakal Mahalok) is the temple corridor built alongside the revived Rudrasagar lake. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Phase 1 on 11 Oct 2022 (Outlook / PTI). The general darshan queue has been routed through it, so you will likely walk part of it on your way in.

Mahakal Lok in numbers (official temple website): a 910 m corridor, 108 pillars, 76 sculptures and a mural wall of 52 paintings based on the Shiva Purana. Phase 1 cost ₹351 crore. Entry: free. Hours: not officially published; generally open from early morning to late night.

The temple has not published a formal notice on fees or hours. Sources agree entry is free but give different timings (6:00 AM–10:00 PM, a midday break, or "open all day"), so check on arrival if you plan a late visit.

Phase 2, covering Maharajwada, Rudrasagar and Ram Ghat, was under way in late 2024; we have not seen a completion date. During Holi 2026, colours and gulal were banned across the temple and Mahakal Lok (Patrika).

Places to visit in Ujjain, sorted by distance from Mahakal

Most of Ujjain's major sights are within 10 km of Mahakal. The four closest (Harsiddhi, Bade Ganesh, Ram Ghat and Gopal Mandir) are an easy walk; for the rest, hire an auto or e-rickshaw for a half-day loop. Walking is often shorter than driving here because of one-way streets.

Secondary temples do not publish official timings, so the hours shown come from MP Tourism or secondary sources: verify locally. Suggested time is our planning estimate and excludes queues.

Harsiddhi Mata temple

Harsiddhi is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the place where Sati's elbow is said to have fallen, according to the Shiva Purana as cited by the Ujjain district administration. Inside, an idol of Annapurna sits between Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, and the temple has a Sri Yantra. Outside stand two Maratha-era deepstambhs (lamp pillars) that are lit on festival nights, especially during Navratri.

MP Tourism lists aarti at 7:00–8:00 AM and 7:00 PM; confirm locally.

Bade Ganesh and Gopal Mandir

Bade Ganesh Mandir sits next to the Mahakal campus on the way to Harsiddhi and houses a large Ganesha idol, so it takes only a few minutes on foot. Gopal Mandir, 1.1 km from Mahakal, is a Krishna temple with a marble spire, built by Bayajibai Shinde (district administration).

Ram Ghat and the Shipra river

Ram Ghat is Ujjain's oldest bathing ghat on the Shipra (also spelt Kshipra) and the main ghat of the Simhastha Kumbh, per MP Tourism. Come in the evening for the Shipra aarti, usually held around sunset; confirm the time locally.

Ved Shala (Jantar Mantar observatory)

Ujjain was the prime meridian for Hindu astronomers, and Sawai Jai Singh II built an observatory here in the early 18th century. Its masonry instruments stand 2.5 km from Mahakal, and the observatory still publishes an annual ephemeris. We could not verify the entry fee, so carry some cash.

Sandipani Ashram, Gadkalika and Bhartrihari Caves

Sandipani Ashram (about 3–4 km) is where, by tradition, Krishna, Balram and Sudama studied. Gadkalika (about 3.5 km) is the goddess traditionally worshipped by the poet Kalidasa. Bhartrihari Caves (about 4–5 km) are linked to the poet-king Bhartrihari. Ask your auto driver to fit them into one loop with Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath.

Mangalnath temple

Mangalnath, about 5 km from Mahakal, overlooks the Shipra and is revered as the birthplace of Mars (Mangal) according to the Matsya Purana. The district administration notes the site was also used for astronomy. Many visitors come for the bhat puja, a curd-rice offering made for Mangal dosha, and Tuesdays are the busiest day.

Kal Bhairav temple

Kal Bhairav, 5.9 km from Mahakal, is dedicated to the chief of the eight Bhairavas (district administration). It is known for its unusual offering: devotees offer liquor to the deity, and part of it is returned as prasad, per MP Tourism. Pair it with Mangalnath on the same auto trip.

Chintaman Ganesh, ISKCON, Navagraha Shani and Kaliadeh Palace

  • ISKCON Ujjain (about 4 km): a Krishna temple listed by the district administration.
  • Chintaman Ganesh (7.2 km): a Ganesha temple on the Fatehabad road, with its own halt on the Indore–Ujjain MEMU line.
  • Navagraha Shani Mandir (about 7 km): at Triveni ghat on the Shipra, on the Indore road, so it is an easy stop on the way back to Indore.
  • Kaliadeh Palace (9.1 km): a palace on an island in the Shipra, with a Sun temple nearby.

Some lists call Omkareshwar a "nearby" Ujjain sight, but it is a separate day trip, not something to squeeze into an afternoon. Our Ujjain–Omkareshwar trip page covers the distance, route and fares.

Ujjain itinerary: 1 day and 2 days

One full day covers Mahakal and the main temples. A second day lets you attend the 4:00 AM Bhasma Aarti and see the outer sights without rushing. Both plans start from Indore.

1 day from Indore (Monday to Saturday, by train)

  1. 6:10 AM: Vande Bharat 20911 from Indore, arriving in Ujjain at about 6:50 AM. The station is 2.3 km from Mahakal by auto.
  2. Morning: Mahakal darshan in the general queue, or on a ₹250 Sheeghra slot if you booked one. Walk through Mahakal Lok on the way.
  3. Late morning: walk to Bade Ganesh, Harsiddhi Mata and Ram Ghat. Eat at the temple's free Annakshetra or in the lanes nearby.
  4. Afternoon: auto loop to Gadkalika, Bhartrihari Caves and Kal Bhairav, reaching Mangalnath after 4:00 PM, since it reportedly closes around midday.
  5. Evening: the Shipra aarti at Ram Ghat around sunset, or Sandhya Aarti at Mahakal if you booked it (booking opens daily at 12:00 PM).
  6. About 10:45 PM: Vande Bharat 20912 back to Indore, arriving at 11:45 PM.

The Vande Bharat does not run on Sundays. Take a cab instead, or the 8:10 AM MEMU out and the 4:00 PM MEMU back for a shorter day.

2 days, with a night in Ujjain

  1. Day 1: follow the one-day plan, but stay overnight near Mahakal instead of taking the late train.
  2. Day 2, 4:00–6:00 AM: Bhasma Aarti, if you secured a slot (see our booking guide). If not, sleep in and watch it on the live stream.
  3. Day 2, morning: Gopal Mandir, Ved Shala, Sandipani Ashram and ISKCON.
  4. Day 2, afternoon: Kaliadeh Palace, then head back towards Indore, stopping at the Navagraha Shani temple at Triveni (on the Indore road) or detouring to Chintaman Ganesh.

How to reach Ujjain from Indore: distance, train, cab and bus

Ujjain is 53 km from Indore by road according to the district administration, or about 56 km from Rajwada in central Indore to Mahakal. The drive takes 1–1.5 hours today. A six-lane widening between Aurobindo Hospital and Hari Phatak began on 15 Jan 2025 and is targeted for completion by 14 Jan 2027. Once it is done, the trip should take 35–45 minutes (Amar Ujala).

By cab: local sedan operators quote about ₹1,250–2,000 one way. For a cab for the whole day, or onward to Omkareshwar, our Ujjain–Omkareshwar trip page covers taxi fares.

By bus or metro: buses run often, but we could not verify current fares. There is no metro yet: the Indore–Ujjain line's project report is under revision, and it will not run before Simhastha 2028 (Free Press Journal).

Indore to Ujjain trains: Vande Bharat and MEMU timings

The Indore–Nagpur Vande Bharat makes a same-day Mahakal trip easy: out at 6:10 AM and back at about 10:45 PM, which gives you roughly 15 hours in Ujjain. The slower MEMU trains run daily.

From Indore airport to Ujjain

The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore (IDR). Published distances to Ujjain range from 53 to 58 km, and a road route from the airport to Mahakal measures 61 km, so plan for 55–60 km and about 1–1.5 hours by cab.

Getting around Ujjain

The temple core is walkable: Harsiddhi, Bade Ganesh, Ram Ghat and Gopal Mandir are all within about 1 km of Mahakal. For Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath and the outer sights, use an auto or e-rickshaw, and agree the fare or the full loop before you set off. Ujjain Junction is 2.3 km from the temple.

Best time to visit Ujjain, with the 2026–27 festival calendar

October to March is the most comfortable time to visit; April to June is hot. MP Tourism notes that Ujjain can be visited year-round and highlights its festivals. The trade-off is crowds: Mondays, the Shravan month and Mahashivratri bring the longest queues, while weekdays outside festival weeks are easier.

Hotels near Mahakal: where to stay in Ujjain

Where you stay depends mostly on whether you have an early aarti booking.

  • Near Mahakal and Harsiddhi: the best base for Bhasma Aarti or an early darshan, because you can walk to the temple before dawn.
  • Nanakheda: about 5 km out, near the Nanakheda bus stand. It works for a cab-based trip, but you will need an auto to reach the temple.
  • Indore: if you only want daytime darshan, staying in Indore and using the Vande Bharat or a cab works well.

The temple's own Atithi Niwas is booked on the official portal. The rules: a maximum of 2 days per booking, check-in at 12:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, one room per 30 days, government photo ID required, and ₹250 for an extra bed.

Our Indore desk can book a hotel near the temple, or plan the trip with Indore as your base. Contact us with your dates.

Tips from our Indore team

  • Bhasma Aarti from Indore means a very early start. Devotees report arriving 30–45 minutes before the 4:00 AM aarti, so either stay the night in Ujjain or leave Indore by cab at about 2:30 AM.
  • Book online, never through agents. In June 2026, a complaint was filed at the Mahakal police station over ₹2,500 charged for a ₹200 aarti permission (Aaj Tak), and a fake ₹30,000 "VIP pass" case was also reported (Navbharat Live). We do not sell darshan or aarti passes; we arrange cabs, stays and itineraries.
  • Go on a weekday if you can. Mondays are the busiest day at Mahakal and Tuesdays at Mangalnath. Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri bring the biggest crowds.
  • Sunday trips need a cab. The Vande Bharat does not run on Sundays, and the MEMU timings leave you a short day.
  • Carry original ID. Take the Aadhaar card or passport you used for any online booking, and leave your phone in the car or hotel.
  • Check the portal the week you travel. Booking rules changed in April and June 2026, and winter aarti timings start around 27 Oct 2026.

Frequently asked questions

  • What are the Mahakal temple timings?

Darshan at Mahakaleshwar runs from the end of Bhasma Aarti at about 6:00 AM to Shayan Aarti at about 10:30 PM, and pauses around Sandhya Aarti. The five daily aartis are Bhasma (4:00 AM), Dadyodak, Bhog, Sandhya and Shayan (10:30 PM). Dadyodak, Bhog and Sandhya shift by 30 minutes between the summer and winter schedules. During Shravan the doors open earlier, at 3:00 AM.

  • How much does VIP darshan cost at Mahakal Ujjain?

VIP darshan, officially called Sheeghra darshan, costs ₹250 per person. You book an hourly slot on the official temple website; slots run from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM and from 8:00 to 9:30 PM. You pay by link and get the slot by SMS. General darshan is free. Avoid anyone selling "VIP passes": a fake ₹30,000 pass case has been reported in Ujjain.

  • Is there an entry fee for Mahakal Lok?

No. Every source we checked says Mahakal Lok is free to enter, though the temple has not published a formal notice. It also has no official opening hours; it is generally open from early morning to late night. The 910 m corridor, with 108 pillars and 76 sculptures, opened on 11 Oct 2022 and sits on the general darshan route.

  • Can I watch Mahakal live darshan online?

Yes. The temple streams darshan on the live darshan page of its official website, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, and on its YouTube channel, @shrimahakaleshwarjyotirlingamm, which the official site links to. It is the simplest way to watch the aartis, including Bhasma Aarti, if you could not get a booking or cannot travel to Ujjain.

  • What are the top places to visit in Ujjain in one day?

In one day, see Mahakaleshwar temple and Mahakal Lok, then walk to Bade Ganesh, Harsiddhi Mata and Ram Ghat, all within about 1 km. In the afternoon, take an auto to Kal Bhairav (5.9 km) and Mangalnath (about 5 km). End with the Shipra aarti at Ram Ghat around sunset, or a booked Sandhya Aarti at Mahakal.

  • Is 2 days enough for Ujjain?

Yes, two days is enough for most visitors. Day one covers Mahakal, Mahakal Lok, the temples within walking distance, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath. Day two suits the 4:00 AM Bhasma Aarti if you have a slot, followed by Gopal Mandir, Ved Shala, Sandipani Ashram and Kaliadeh Palace, with the Navagraha Shani temple or Chintaman Ganesh on the way out.

  • How far is Ujjain from Indore?

Ujjain is about 53 km from Indore by road, according to the Ujjain district administration, or about 56 km from Rajwada in central Indore to Mahakal. The drive takes 1–1.5 hours. A six-lane widening of the highway is targeted for completion by January 2027 and is expected to cut the drive to 35–45 minutes.

  • How do I go to Mahakal from Indore?

The easiest options are a cab (1–1.5 hours, about ₹1,200–2,000 one way) or the Vande Bharat Express, which leaves Indore at 6:10 AM and reaches Ujjain at about 6:50 AM, Monday to Saturday. Daily MEMU trains are slower but cost around ₹15. Buses run often to Dewas Gate. Ujjain Junction is 2.3 km from the temple.

  • Is there a metro or Vande Bharat from Indore to Ujjain?

There is a Vande Bharat but no metro. Train 20911 leaves Indore at 6:10 AM and 20912 leaves Ujjain at about 10:45 PM, Monday to Saturday, giving you roughly 15 hours in Ujjain. The planned Indore–Ujjain metro is still at the project-report stage and will not run before Simhastha 2028.

  • What is the best time to visit Ujjain?

October to March is the most comfortable time to visit Ujjain; April to June is hot. The temple is open all year, so plan around crowds instead. Mondays, the Shravan month and Mahashivratri (6 Mar 2027) are the busiest times. Winter aarti timings are expected to start around 27 Oct 2026, so check the official schedule before you go.

  • How far is Kal Bhairav temple from Mahakal?

Kal Bhairav temple is 5.9 km by road from Mahakaleshwar, so take an auto or cab. It is dedicated to the chief of the eight Bhairavas and is known for its liquor offering: devotees offer liquor to the deity and part of it is returned as prasad. Reported hours run from about 6:00 AM to 9:00–10:00 PM, but confirm locally.

  • When does the Nagchandreshwar temple open?

The Nagchandreshwar shrine opens only once a year, on Nag Panchami (Shravan Shukla Panchami). It is on the top level of Mahakaleshwar temple, above the Omkareshwar Shivalinga and the Mahakal Jyotirlinga on the lowest level. In 2026 it opened on 17 Aug. The 2027 date is not yet published, so check the official temple website closer to Shravan.

  • Where should I stay for Mahakal darshan?

Stay in the lanes around Mahakal and Harsiddhi if you have an early aarti, because you can walk to the temple. The Atithi Niwas run by the temple is booked online for up to 2 days per booking and needs government photo ID. If you only want daytime darshan, staying in Indore and taking the Vande Bharat or a cab works well.

  • Can I take my phone inside Mahakal temple?

Plan not to. Phones are banned or restricted inside Mahakaleshwar temple, and photography near the sanctum is not allowed, though reports differ on when the rule started. Leave your phone in your car or hotel, or with someone waiting outside, and carry only the ID and essentials you need for darshan.
