By the Traverse travel desk in Indore (est. 2014), 55 km from Mahakal. Traverse does not sell or arrange Bhasma Aarti passes. Only the temple issues them, for ₹200 a person, on its own website. This guide shows you how to book yourself on the official temple portal: when Advance and Tatkal booking open, the ID and request limits, blocked dates, the morning itself, and how to spot a fake pass. Every rule was verified on 8 Oct 2026 (how we verified). For temple timings and places to see, read our Ujjain and Mahakal darshan guide.

What is the Mahakal Bhasma Aarti?

Bhasma Aarti, held from 4:00 to 6:00 AM, is the first aarti of the day at Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain. The official temple website calls Mahakaleshwar the only Shivalinga in the world where Bhasma Aarti is performed every day. The sacred ash is traditionally prepared from cow-dung cakes (gau-upla) and offered by the Mahant of Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani or an authorised representative.

Is it cremation ash? No. Amar Ujala reported in Feb 2025 that it is made from cow-dung cakes and peepal, palash, shami and ber wood, not cremation ash as in the past.

Bhasma Aarti booking: Advance vs Tatkal (2026 rules)

Since 9 Apr 2026, Bhasma Aarti permission is issued online only, on the official website (Amar Ujala, ETV Bharat, 15 Apr 2026). There are two ways to book:

  • Advance is a request: pick a date next month and submit details without paying. It "does not guarantee a booking"; if approved, the temple texts you a payment link.
  • Tatkal is for tomorrow only: it opens at 8:00 AM the day before, first come, first served, and you pay at once.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the official booking portal. The Advance window shrank from about 3 months to about 1 month in April 2026 (Amar Ujala), so blogs quoting "30 days" or "3 months" are out of date.

Open now: on 8 Oct 2026 the portal offered "Advance Bhasmaarti (November 2026)". December dates open on 1 Nov 2026 at 8:00 AM, but 25–31 Dec is blocked. Tatkal shows "STARTING SOON AT 8:00 AM" from 7:50 AM.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the official portal. Fee: ETV Bharat (15 Apr 2026). 90-day rule: Navbharat Live and Dainik Jagran (22 Jun 2026).

Administrator Pratham Kaushik announced the 90-day rule on 22 Jun 2026 to stop repeat monthly permits through protocol (VIP) quotas.

How many people can attend Bhasma Aarti each day?

The temple doesn't publish a daily figure. Reports put seated permissions at about 1,700 a day, including 300 Tatkal seats, the old offline quota (Amar Ujala, India.com, 15 Apr 2026). A June 2026 Aaj Tak report says about 2,500, which likely counts protocol, priest, media and other quotas.

How to book Bhasma Aarti online, step by step

Booking happens only on shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in/services. Screen and field names below are from the portal as we checked it on 8 Oct 2026; we didn't submit a request, since each one counts towards your cap.

  1. Type the address yourself: shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in/services, not a link from an ad or message. The old shrimahakaleshwar.com redirects here, so the address bar should end in .mp.gov.in.
  2. Log in with a 10-digit Indian mobile number and OTP. First time, set a password (6+ characters). The portal re-verifies your mobile by OTP every 30 days.
  3. Choose your track: Services → Bhasmaarti → Tatkal Bhasmaarti (tomorrow's date) or Advance Bhasmaarti (next month).
  4. Advance: pick a date on next month's calendar (unavailable dates show "Booking quota full" or "Date is restricted"), then the number of persons.
  5. Tatkal: from 8:00 AM, tomorrow's date is filled in and the portal tells you whether slots are available, full or restricted.
  6. Add each visitor: Name (letters only, as on the ID), Relation, ID Proof Type (Aadhaar Card or Passport), ID Proof Number, and a face photo, uploaded or taken with your camera.
  7. Submit. Advance confirms "Your bhasmarti booking request is successfully submitted", with nothing to pay yet. Tatkal goes straight to payment.
  8. Pay ₹200 per person within 15 minutes, or the booking is cancelled and you start again. Approved Advance requests are paid via the temple's SMS link.
  9. Download the pass. "View Entry Pass" shows your Registration No.; download or print it. It also appears under "Account & Booking History" → "Darshan Bookings".
Waiting on an Advance request? How requests are approved, and when approval SMSes go out, isn't officially published. Watch the number you booked with, call 1800-233-1008 if nothing arrives, and ignore anyone offering to "speed up" approval.

Tips for the 8:00 AM Tatkal rush

  • Log in the evening before, so a 30-day OTP check doesn't eat into 8:00 AM, and be on the Tatkal screen by 7:50 AM.
  • Keep ready: each person's name as on the ID, their Aadhaar (12 digits) or Passport number, and a clear face photo on the device.
  • Use one device and a stable connection, with UPI or a card ready for the 15-minute window. And check the date isn't blocked.

Payment failed or no pass? Refunds and cancellation

  • Payment failed or aborted: the portal says it is refunded within 10 working days. If not, contact your bank.
  • Paid but no pass: call 1800-233-1008 (toll-free), 0734-2550563 or 0734-2559277, or email office@mahakaleshwar.nic.in.
  • Cancelling: no cancellation or refund option is published. Treat a confirmed pass as non-refundable and non-transferable, and call the helpline if plans change.

Is there offline booking for Bhasma Aarti?

No. The offline counter closed when online booking became mandatory on 9 Apr 2026, and its 300 free daily permissions became the online Tatkal quota (Navbharat Live, 15 Apr 2026). Any website that tells you to queue at a counter is out of date. The only no-booking option is free chalit darshan.

Dates when Bhasma Aarti booking is closed (2026–27)

The official portal won't accept bookings for these dates; plan on chalit darshan or the live stream instead.

Bhasma Aarti timing and what happens on the day

Bhasma Aarti runs 4:00–6:00 AM in summer and winter, per the official timing page, and doesn't move when the other aartis switch to winter timings (expected around 27 Oct 2026). In Shravan 2026 it began at 3:00 AM (2:30 AM on Mondays). Full schedule: our Ujjain guide.

Bhasma Aarti dress code

The temple's website and portal publish no written Bhasma Aarti dress code. Most sites quote the 2023 sanctum rule: on 14 Sep 2023 the temple committee required a dhoti and sola for men, a saree for women and a salwar suit for girls up to 10 entering the garbhagriha, banning jeans, shirts and trousers there (Times Now Hindi, Patrika).

But the sanctum has been closed to all except priests since 4 Jul 2023, barring constitutional office-holders (Patrika, Oct 2024). A pass seats you in the mandapam, so it doesn't normally include sanctum entry or jal arpan.

In practice, traditional dress is the norm and reportedly checked at the gate: a dhoti for men (an unstitched sola or angavastram is safest) and a saree for women. Western clothes risk being turned away; whether shirts are refused isn't officially published.

Phones, bags and ID at the gate

  • No phones. The temple's ticket text says: "Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the temple premises." So no photos or video; watch the official live stream instead.
  • Lockers with receipts were reported at Mansarovar Bhawan, Gate No. 4 near Bada Ganpati and Avantika Gate No. 1 (Free Press Journal, Apr 2025).
  • Original ID for each person, matching the number on the pass. Officials check at the gate, so carry a printed pass too.

For women: covering the face during the ash offering

Women book and attend like anyone else. By tradition, they cover their face with a veil (ghunghat) or the saree pallu during the ash offering, when Mahakal is said to take a visible (sakar) form and receive the bhasma snan (Amar Ujala, Feb 2025). It is a custom, not a written rule, but it is widely followed.

Senior citizens, children and divyang devotees

We found no senior-citizen or divyang quota, wheelchair route or priority entry. The 2:00 AM start and the walk from Neelkanth Gate are tiring, so call 1800-233-1008 about wheelchair help before booking. For less mobile relatives, the live stream or a daytime Sheeghra darshan (see our Ujjain guide) may be kinder.

Reaching a 4:00 AM Bhasma Aarti from Indore

Mahakal is 53–56 km from Indore. To reach Neelkanth Gate by about 2:00–2:30 AM, leave around 1:00–1:30 AM by cab, or stay the night in Ujjain; our Ujjain guide covers where to stay near Mahakal and getting there from Indore. For Omkareshwar too, see our Ujjain–Omkareshwar trip from Indore.

Book the pass yourself; we'll handle the rest. Our Indore desk can arrange the 1:00 AM cab and a stay near Mahakal. Contact us with your date.

No pass? How to see Bhasma Aarti without booking

Free chalit (walk-past) darshan. Without a pass you can still see Bhasma Aarti from a moving queue, though not seated; Amar Ujala, India.com and Navbharat Live reported in Apr 2026 that this continues. Where and when the queue forms isn't officially published, so ask at the temple the evening before or call 1800-233-1008.

  • Live stream: on the temple's live darshan page and its YouTube channel, @shrimahakaleshwarjyotirlingamm.
  • Tatkal for the next day, at 8:00 AM, if you're staying on.
  • Another aarti: Sandhya and Shayan Aartis are booked on the same portal, and general darshan is free; see our Ujjain and Mahakal darshan guide for timings and fees.

How to spot a fake Bhasma Aarti booking site

Only shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in issues Bhasma Aarti permission, for ₹200. Traverse never sells or arranges passes, and no agent can legitimately sell one. Reported cases show how devotees get caught:

Checklist: is this a real Bhasma Aarti booking?

  1. Address bar: shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. A site with "bhasma aarti booking" in its name, or an "agent number", is not the temple.
  2. Price: ₹200 a person. "VIP Bhasma Aarti tickets" at ₹1,500–7,500 are not a temple product.
  3. Payment: only on the portal or the temple's SMS link. Never pay a person by UPI, WhatsApp or Telegram, and skip paid PDF guides promising insider tips.
  4. Pass: your own name and ID number, with a Registration No. that shows in your own booking history.
  5. No guarantees: even an Advance request "does not guarantee a booking", so a promised seat or a "setting" at the temple is a red flag.
  6. Already paid? Report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, keep screenshots and receipts, and tell the temple helpline (1800-233-1008).

Sources and how we verified

We checked every rule here on 8 Oct 2026 against the official portal (its booking-screen text, notices, refund text and public lists of accepted IDs and restricted dates), without submitting a booking. News reports are linked where each fact appears; we opened each one, including Webdunia (Jan 2025) on chalit darshan.

Rules changed twice in 2026, so we plan to re-check before 25 Dec, Mahashivratri and Shravan 2027. Spotted an error? Tell us.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I book Mahakal Bhasma Aarti online? (महाकाल भस्म आरती बुकिंग कैसे करें?)

Book only on the official portal, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in/services. Log in with an Indian mobile number and OTP, and choose Advance (from the 1st of the previous month, 8:00 AM) or Tatkal (8:00 AM the day before). Add each visitor's name, Aadhaar or Passport number and face photo. Tatkal is paid at once (₹200 each); Advance only after approval, via an SMS link.

  • When does Bhasma Aarti booking open?

Advance booking opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM, so December 2026 dates open on 1 Nov. Tatkal opens at 8:00 AM the day before: for 15 Nov, book on 14 Nov. Advance is only a request and is not guaranteed; Tatkal is first come, first served.

  • What is the Bhasma Aarti ticket price? Is it free? (भस्म आरती का टिकट कितने का है?)

₹200 per person, for Advance and Tatkal alike, paid only on the official portal or the temple's SMS link. Free offline permissions ended in April 2026, though free chalit (walk-past) darshan continues without a seat. Anyone charging ₹1,500 or more for a "VIP" pass is not the temple.

  • What time is Bhasma Aarti, and when should I reach? (भस्म आरती कितने बजे होती है?)

Bhasma Aarti runs 4:00–6:00 AM all year, earlier in Shravan (3:00 AM in 2026; 2:30 AM on Mondays). No 2026 reporting time is published, so aim to reach Neelkanth Gate by about 2:00–2:30 AM and follow your pass or SMS. From Indore, leave around 1:00–1:30 AM.

  • How many people are allowed in Bhasma Aarti?

The temple doesn't publish a limit. Reports put seated permissions at about 1,700 a day, including 300 Tatkal seats; one June 2026 report says about 2,500, likely counting other quotas. Each mobile number or Aadhaar can place at most 3 requests, and a mobile number can book once every 90 days.

  • Which ID is needed for Bhasma Aarti?

Only an Aadhaar card or a Passport, the two ID types on the booking form. The form needs an ID number and face photo for every visitor, so plan on one for each child too. Carry the original ID whose number you entered, because permissions are checked at Neelkanth Gate.

  • What is the dress code for Bhasma Aarti? (भस्म आरती का ड्रेस कोड क्या है?)

Men usually wear a dhoti, ideally with an unstitched sola, and women a saree; girls up to 10 may wear a salwar suit. This comes from a 2023 sanctum rule, and the sanctum has been closed to general devotees since July 2023. Mandapam viewers have no written rule, but traditional dress is reportedly checked.

  • Can I attend Bhasma Aarti without booking?

Yes, but not seated. Free chalit (walk-past) darshan of Bhasma Aarti continues for devotees without a pass; where the queue forms isn't officially published, so ask at the temple or call 1800-233-1008. You can also watch the official live stream, or try Tatkal at 8:00 AM for the next day.

  • Can women watch Bhasma Aarti? Why do they cover their face?

Yes, women book and attend like anyone else. By tradition, they cover their face with a veil or the saree pallu during the ash offering, when Mahakal is said to take a visible (sakar) form and receive the bhasma snan. It's a custom, not a written rule, but it is widely followed.

  • Are mobile phones allowed in Bhasma Aarti?

No. The temple's ticket text says mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the premises, so there are no photos or video. Leave your phone at the hotel or with your driver, or use the lockers reported at Mansarovar Bhawan, Gate No. 4 and Avantika Gate No. 1.

  • Is VIP Bhasma Aarti booking real? (भस्म आरती VIP पास)

No public "VIP Bhasma Aarti ticket" exists; the only booking is ₹200 a person on shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. In June 2026 an inspection found devotees charged ₹2,500 for a ₹200 permission, and in September 2026 twelve Meerut devotees lost ₹30,000 to fake VIP passes. Never pay an agent; report fraud on 1930.

  • Can I cancel my Bhasma Aarti booking or get a refund?

No cancellation option is published, so treat a confirmed pass as non-refundable and non-transferable, and call 1800-233-1008 if plans change. The portal says failed or aborted payments are refunded within 10 working days. Paid but got no pass? Call the helpline or 0734-2550563 / 0734-2559277.

  • On which dates is Bhasma Aarti booking closed?

As of 8 Oct 2026, the portal blocks 20 Oct 2026 (Dussehra), 25 Dec 2026–5 Jan 2027 (New Year) and 6–7 Mar 2027 (Mahashivratri). In Shravan, every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, plus Nag Panchami, is also blocked; the 2027 dates aren't loaded yet. Check the Advance calendar before you plan.
