Where Is Mandu, Madhya Pradesh?

Mandu sits about 633 m up on a spur of the Vindhyas in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. Google Maps calls it Mandav; it is also Mandavgad, and inscriptions call it Mandapa-Durga. UNESCO counts 61 protected monuments, including the fort wall.

It is on UNESCO's tentative list (since 1998) but is not a World Heritage Site.

A Short History of Mandu, the City of Joy

Most of what you see dates from 1405 to 1561, when Mandu was the Malwa sultans' capital. Our main source is G. Yazdani's Mandu: The City of Joy (1929).

Mandu timeline
WhenWhat happened

1401–06Dilawar Khan Ghuri declares independence; the city becomes Shadiabad
c. 1406–35Hoshang Shah moves the capital here from Dhar

Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati: History vs Legend

History: Baz Bahadur, the last independent sultan of Malwa, was defeated near Sarangpur in 1561, and Roopmati, a singer, took poison rather than be captured (Ferishta, cited by Yazdani).

Legend: she would marry him only if she could see the Narmada every day, so he built Rewa Kund and her pavilion. ASI says the pavilion began as a military watch-post.

Mandu Fort: the Walls and 12 Gates

Mandu does not have a fort; it is one. MP Tourism describes about 45 km of walls with 12 gateways (it gives 82 km elsewhere, so treat the length as approximate).

The main northern entrance, Delhi Darwaza, is a reddish-stone arch 28 ft high with guard rooms; stop for a photo on the drive in. Tarapur Gate bears the 1406–07 inscription naming the city Shadiabad; near it, Humayun's men scaled the walls in 1534.

Places to Visit in Mandu, Group by Group

The monuments line a north–south spine about 9.5 km long. ASI tickets only three groups: the Royal Enclave, Hoshang Shah's Tomb (entered through the Jami Masjid), and Roopmati's Pavilion with Baz Bahadur's Palace. Everything else is free.

Royal Enclave: Jahaz Mahal and Hindola Mahal

Jahaz Mahal, the "ship palace", is 361 ft long but only 48 ft wide, set between Kapur Talao and Munja Talao. When both lakes fill in the monsoon, it appears to float. It is attributed to Ghiyas-ud-din Khalji (1469–1500).

Hindola Mahal, the "swinging palace", is named for its steeply sloping walls and hosts the evening show. The same ticket covers Champa Baoli, a stepwell with cool underground rooms; the hammam; Dilawar Khan's Mosque (1405), Mandu's earliest Indo-Islamic building; and a small ASI museum in Taveli Mahal.

Village Group: Jami Masjid and Hoshang Shah's Tomb

About 1 km south, the Jami Masjid, completed by Mahmud Khalji in 1454, has three great domes, 17 mihrab niches and a marble pulpit. You walk through it to Hoshang Shah's Tomb, on the same ticket. Completed around 1440, it is often described as India's earliest marble mausoleum.

Did it inspire the Taj Mahal? Not on the evidence. A doorway inscription records that on 14 Dec 1659 four of Shah Jahan's architects, including Ustad Hamid, whom Yazdani links to the Taj, came "to show our reverence". But the Taj Mahal was completed around 1653, six years earlier. The visit shows Mughal admiration; the idea that the tomb was the Taj's model is folklore.

Just east, Ashrafi Mahal, a madrasa to which Mahmud Khalji added his tomb and a victory tower, is largely ruined; it was free to enter in late 2025.

On the Way South: Darya Khan's Tomb and Echo Point

Three free stops lie 1–2 km apart. Darya Khan's Tomb, for an officer of Sultan Mahmud II, once wore coloured enamel. Sagar Talao is the plateau's largest lake, and Echo Point is in a grove just south of its embankment: sing towards Dai-ka-Mahal and your voice comes back.

Rewa Kund Group: Baz Bahadur's Palace and Roopmati's Pavilion

The southern group is about 6 km by road from Jahaz Mahal. Rewa Kund, the reservoir Baz Bahadur built or widened to supply Roopmati's Pavilion, is free; pilgrims bathe here for the Narmada legend.

Baz Bahadur's Palace, up forty broad steps, has a cistern courtyard and two terrace baradaris. Its Persian inscription credits Sultan Nasir Shah in 1508–09; Baz Bahadur only lived here later.

Rani Roopmati's Pavilion began as a watch-post, according to ASI, and its domed pavilions were added later. It overlooks the Nimar plain, 365.8 m below; visitors report seeing the Narmada on clear days.

More Free Sights: Neelkanth, Lohani Caves, Jain Temple

  • Neelkanth Mahadev: a Mughal pleasure lodge (1572–77) on the site of a Shiva shrine, now an active temple 61 steps down; dress modestly. It is on the west edge, about 3 km from the Jami Masjid. Map apps show several "Nilkanth" pins, so confirm locally.
  • Lohani Caves and Sunset Point: pre-Islamic rock-cut caves, a short walk from the village.
  • Jain temple (Shri Mandavgadh Tirth): a Shwetambar temple to Suparshvanath, largely modern.

Mandu Ticket Prices and Timings (2026)

Fees are under review. On 8 Sep 2026 ASI gazetted a draft revision of its ticketed-monument list. It does not name Mandu or give new fees, so the prices below are as last published by ASI: re-check them at the counter.

Indore to Mandu by car, bus or train

Car or taxi is easiest; a late-2025 traveller found app cabs from about ₹2,000 one way. For a car and driver, ask us for a quote.

Bus: the same traveller found no direct bus and took a Dhar bus from Gangwal or Sarwate bus stand, then a local bus or shared jeep (about 3 hours, ₹140). MP Tourism still lists direct buses, so check locally.

Train: Indore Jn is the nearest station today. The new Tihi–Dhar line has its safety inspection on 28–29 Oct 2026, and trains are expected to follow, making Dhar (37 km) the nearest. No start date has been announced.

Getting Around Mandu

A car is best: the Royal Enclave and village group are walkable, but the Rewa Kund group is 5–6 km south. Autos and e-rickshaws wait at the Jahaz Mahal parking (agree stops and fare first), and bicycles were for hire at ₹150 a day in late 2025.

Mandu in Monsoon and the Best Time to Visit

The monsoon, early July to mid-September, is Mandu's season: the lakes fill so Jahaz Mahal seems to float, mist wraps Roopmati's Pavilion, and Kakra Khoh waterfall near Nalchha runs. October–February suits walking. March–June reaches 40–46 °C, so start at dawn.

Monsoon safety: our tips

  • Wet stone at the palaces and pavilions turns slick with algae; wear shoes with grip.
  • Stay back from edges: the plateau drops about 365 m below Roopmati's Pavilion. Take care on the wet steps at Rewa Kund and around Echo Point.
  • Drive the foggy ghat roads in daylight; skip a late return to Indore in heavy rain.
  • Go on a weekday, or start by 7:00 AM, to beat the weekend and Sawan crowds.
  • Keep out of stream beds at waterfalls. In Jul 2026 people ignored Indore's waterfall bans; we found no such order for Mandu, but the risk is the same.

What to Eat in Mandu: Khurasani Imli and Dal Bafla

Mandu's food souvenir is Khurasani imli, the African baobab's velvety pod, whose tangy pulp goes into sherbet and dal. Tribal vendors sell it by the road near Jahaz Mahal, Rewa Kund and Roopmati's Pavilion.

In June 2026 it received a GI tag. The plateau has more than 1,000 baobabs, India's largest naturally established concentration, conserved for generations by the Bhil community. Yazdani records that it was "supposed to have been introduced" from Africa under Mahmud Khalji (1436–69); MP Tourism credits a 14th-century gift from Egypt. Despite a common claim, Mandu is not Asia's only baobab site.

For a meal, try Malwa's dal bafla or a poha-jalebi breakfast; the town is mostly vegetarian.

Mandu Festival (Mandu Utsav): 2026 Status

No dates have been announced for 2026–27. Mandu Utsav has been held in late December or early January; the last confirmed edition ran 7–11 Jan 2023. A revival discussed in Nov 2025 was never confirmed. We will update this page when MP Tourism announces dates.

Where to Stay in Mandu

  • MPT Malwa Resort: beside Sagar Talao, with a pool. MP Tourism lists ₹3,290–4,290 (07292-263235); booking sites have shown more, so check.
  • MPT Malwa Retreat: budget cottages and a dormitory; reviews call it basic.
  • Private hotels: a few small ones, some noisy at weekends.
  • Coming up: homestays, part of a ₹25 crore state plan (2025), an ITC Welcomhotel with no opening date, and an Evolve Back property listed for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Mandu famous for? (मांडू किस लिए प्रसिद्ध है?)

Mandu is famous for its Malwa Sultanate monuments. As Shadiabad, the "City of Joy", it was the sultans' capital, and 61 protected monuments survive, among them Jahaz Mahal, Hoshang Shah's marble tomb and Roopmati's Pavilion. It is also known for the Baz Bahadur–Roopmati legend, monsoon scenery and Khurasani imli.

  • How far is Mandu from Indore? (इंदौर से मांडू कितनी दूर है?)

Mandu is 83 km from Indore via Betma and Nalchha, about 2–2.5 hours by car, or about 100 km via Dhar. A car or taxi is easiest. A late-2025 traveller found no direct bus and changed at Dhar, so check locally before you go.

  • How many days are enough for Mandu? (मांडू घूमने के लिए कितने दिन चाहिए?)

One full day covers the three ticketed groups on a day trip from Indore. Two days, with a night on the plateau, adds the light and sound show, Neelkanth Mahadev, the Lohani Caves and an early start at Roopmati's Pavilion. Add a day for Maheshwar.

  • Which is better, Mandu or Maheshwar? (मांडू या महेश्वर, कौन बेहतर है?)

Neither; they are different trips. Mandu is a plateau of Sultanate-era ruins, best in the monsoon. Maheshwar is a living temple town on the Narmada, with ghats, Ahilya Fort, handloom saris and an evening aarti. They are 43 km apart, so many people do both in two days.

  • What is the entry fee for Jahaz Mahal and Mandu's monuments? (जहाज महल का टिकट कितना है?)

As last published by ASI, each of Mandu's three ticketed groups costs ₹25 for Indian visitors (₹20 cashless) and ₹300 for foreigners (₹250 cashless); under-15s are free. That is about ₹75 per Indian adult. A draft ASI revision was gazetted on 8 Sep 2026, so re-check at the counter.

  • What are the timings of Jahaz Mahal and the other monuments?

ASI lists Mandu's monuments as open daily from sunrise to sunset. A late-2025 visitor found counters selling tickets from about 9:00 AM, so confirm locally. The light and sound show at Hindola Mahal starts at 7:00 PM in Hindi and 7:50 PM in English.

  • Is there a light and sound show in Mandu?

Yes. MP Tourism runs it at Hindola Mahal in the Royal Enclave: Hindi at 7:00 PM and English at 7:50 PM. Tickets cost ₹180 for an Indian adult, ₹100 for an Indian child and ₹300 for a foreigner (Jul 2026). In heavy rain, check that it is running.

  • What is the best time to visit Mandu?

July to September is best for monsoon greenery, full lakes and mist at Roopmati's Pavilion. October to February is the most comfortable for walking between monuments, though nights get cold. March to June is hot, with highs of 40–46 °C, so start at dawn.

  • Is it safe to visit Mandu in the monsoon?

Yes, with care. Wet stone and steps get slippery, so wear shoes with grip and stay back from edges; the plateau drops about 365 m below Roopmati's Pavilion. Drive the foggy ghat roads in daylight and go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

  • Did Hoshang Shah's Tomb inspire the Taj Mahal?

There is no evidence that it did. A doorway inscription records that four of Shah Jahan's architects, including Ustad Hamid, visited on 14 Dec 1659 to pay their respects, about six years after the Taj Mahal was completed. It shows the Mughals admired the tomb; the "inspiration" story is folklore.

  • What is the story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati?

Baz Bahadur was the last independent sultan of Malwa, and Roopmati was a singer. Legend says she would marry him only if she could see the Narmada daily, hence Rewa Kund and her pavilion. History records that Akbar's general defeated him in 1561 and Roopmati took poison rather than be captured.

  • When is the Mandu Festival (Mandu Utsav)?

No dates have been announced for 2026–27 as of 8 Oct 2026. Mandu Utsav has been held in late December or early January; the last confirmed edition ran 7–11 Jan 2023, and a revival discussed in Nov 2025 was never confirmed. We will update this page when dates are out.

  • What is Mandu's Khurasani imli?

Khurasani imli is the fruit of the African baobab. Mandu has more than 1,000 baobab trees, India's largest naturally established concentration, and the fruit received a GI tag in June 2026. Tribal vendors sell the tangy pods at roadside stalls near the monuments.

  • Is Mandu a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No. The Group of Monuments at Mandu has been on India's UNESCO Tentative List since 1998, but it has not been inscribed. Madhya Pradesh submitted a nomination dossier in 2019, and the World Heritage Centre sent it back for revision. We found no later progress.
