Omkareshwar is the fourth of the 12 jyotirlingas: a temple on an Om-shaped island in the Narmada, about 77–80 km from Indore. Our travel desk in Indore put this guide together for pilgrims planning darshan. It covers the trust's current timetable (the temple is open until 10:30 PM, not 9:30), the ₹300 Shighra Darshan, Mamleshwar, the new Ekatma Dham with its 108-ft Statue of Oneness, the parikrama, boating, and how to get here now that no trains run to Omkareshwar. Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the Shri Omkareshwar Mandir Trust website and MP Tourism.

About Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga: the Om-shaped island

At Omkareshwar the Narmada splits into two channels around Mandhata (Shivpuri) island, whose outline resembles the ॐ symbol and gives the temple its name. The island is about 4 km long, and the northern channel is traditionally called the Kaveri. Omkareshwar is the fourth of the 12 jyotirlingas, and you reach it on foot over one of two bridges or by boat.

Legends and the five-storey temple

In the trust's telling, the lingam that appeared after the Vindhya mountain's penance was divided in two, becoming Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. Wikipedia traces the temple to the Paramara era (11th century), with an 18th-century Holkar rebuild completed under Ahilyabai. The trust itself says there is "no authentic record" of who built it.

The temple has five floors: Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Siddhnath, Gupteshwar and Dhwajeshwar. The sanctum is older than the frontage and does not line up with the main door. Worship happens three times a day: the trust in the morning, Scindia-family priests in the afternoon and Holkar-family priests in the evening.

Omkareshwar Temple Timings and Aarti Schedule (2026)

Correction: the temple is open until 10:30 PM. Under the trust's official schedule, darshan runs from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM with three short breaks. Pages that give an 8:30 PM or 9:30 PM close, or list an extra "Sandhya Aarti", are using an out-of-date timetable.

Somvar Sawari and festival days

Every Monday a golden palki carries a three-faced idol of Omkareshwar through town from Koti Tirth Ghat. This Somvar Sawari is at its grandest in Shravan, and Mondays are the busiest days. The trust has not published Mahashivratri hours, so check with its helpline. In a heavy rush, general queues can take 3–4 hours.

Omkareshwar VIP (Shighra) Darshan, Rules and Tips

General darshan is free and needs no booking. For a shorter wait, the trust sells a Shighra (quick) Darshan for ₹300 per person on its special darshan page. Traverse does not sell darshan passes.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against the trust's special darshan, Rules and FAQ pages. Darshan may pause for VIP visits.

How to book the ₹300 Shighra Darshan

  1. Book a 2-hour slot on the trust website or at the counter, on the day of your visit.
  2. Print the ticket and carry a photo ID, such as Aadhaar, for each visitor.
  3. Collect a wristband at one of the collection points below.
  4. Walk in over the bridges; the trust asks booked visitors not to use boats.
  5. Enter within your slot. The ticket works once.

You can reschedule once before the booked date through the helpline (+91 89899 98686, 8 AM–8 PM). The booking page says all slots are open, but the trust's rules say special darshan runs until 8:00 PM, so check availability for a late visit.

Sparsh darshan, dress code and offerings

Sparsh darshan is not allowed: the trust's rules prohibit touching the Shivling. Only water may be offered in the sanctum, and priests perform abhishek at designated spots. There is no mandatory dress code, though modest clothing is recommended. In heavy Shravan rushes, devotees may take darshan from about 10 ft away.

Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga: Why You Visit Both Temples

The Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram names this place as "Omkāram Amaleśwaram". Omkareshwar is the jyotirlinga, and Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar), on the south bank of the Narmada, is traditionally considered its other half, so pilgrims visit both to complete darshan. They are not two separate jyotirlingas.

Mamleshwar is an ASI-protected monument with Mahimna Stotra inscriptions dated 1063 AD, managed by the Ahilyabai Khasgi Trust. There is no official timetable online; third-party listings say roughly 5:00 AM–9:30 PM, so confirm locally. Which temple comes first is a custom, not a rule.

Ekatma Dham and the Statue of Oneness (Adi Shankaracharya Statue)

Ekatma Dham, on Omkar (Mandhata) Parvat, honours Adi Shankaracharya. The trust says he was initiated by his guru, Govind Bhagavatpada, at the Govindeshwar cave near the main temple. The first phase, the Statue of Oneness, was unveiled on 21 Sep 2023.

  • Height: 108 ft, showing Shankara as a 12-year-old boy in a walking pose.
  • Base: a 54-ft pedestal on a 27-ft lotus-petal base.
  • Material: a bronze alloy of 88% copper, 8% tin and 4% lead.
  • Sculptor: Bhagwan Rampure of Solapur, from a concept sketch by Vasudeo Kamath.
  • Official source: oneness.org.in.

Visiting Ekatma Dham: entry, hours and access

Entry is free, and you need no ticket. The official FAQ calls 10 AM–6 PM the "ideal" time to visit; these are not formal hours, and construction is ongoing. The statue is on the parikrama route. We could not confirm whether vehicles can drive up, so ask locally. In April–June the site is exposed, so go early and carry water.

Advaita Lok and the Panchayatan temple

Phase 2, the Advaita Lok museum, is under construction and not open as of Oct 2026, and no opening date has been announced. On 27 Aug 2026, chief minister Mohan Yadav laid the foundation of a Nagara-style Panchayatan temple at the site. The five-day Ekatma Parv festival is held here in April; in 2026 it ran from 17 to 21 Apr.

Omkareshwar Parikrama: the 7 km Omkar Parvat Walk

The parikrama circles Omkar (Mandhata) Parvat, the hill that forms the island. The trust puts it at about 7 km and 2–2.5 hours on foot. Stops along the route include:

  • Siddhanath Baradari
  • Gauri Somnath, with its 6-ft black stone linga
  • Rinmukteshwar, where the Kaveri meets the Narmada
  • Lete Hanuman and Aashapuri Devi
  • Ekatma Dham and the Statue of Oneness
  • Kedareshwar
  • The ruined Chand-Suraj and Bhim-Arjun gateways

The trust's guided heritage walk (₹200, 7–9 AM)

The trust runs a guided Omkar Parvat Parikrama from 7:00 to 9:00 AM. It costs ₹200 for one person, ₹500 for a group of 2–5 and ₹1,000 for 6–10, including a guide, water and refreshments. Book a day ahead. Pilgrims have traditionally walked the route on their own, but the trust lists only this slot, so confirm the rules with its helpline.

Parikrama by boat

A boat round of the island costs around ₹200 per person (indicative) and takes 1.5–2 hours. In Jun 2026, during the Adhik Maas crowds, the Nagar Parishad stopped full-island rounds after 2 PM. Check locally whether that rule still applies.

Ghats, Jhula Pul and the Old Bridge

Besides Koti Tirth, the ghats include Chakra Tirth, Gaumukh, Brahmapuri and Sangam, where iron railings and safety boats are in place. The two bridges are often confused. The Jhula Pul is the Mamleshwar Setu, a 235 m suspension bridge (2004) leading straight to the temple gate. The Old Bridge is a 200 m footbridge completed in 1979 (trust bridges page).

Narmada Boating and the Evening Aarti

There is no official boat fare list. As a rough guide, a shared crossing costs around ₹30–50 per person and a private boat around ₹700–1,000 or more. Agree the fare before boarding and ask for life jackets. Around Sep 2026 the Nagar Parishad cancelled six boat licences for dropping passengers in a restricted area.

The Narmada Aarti at Koti Tirth Ghat runs every evening for about 30 minutes and is free to watch. Performing it costs ₹1,500 for two people plus ₹300 per extra person, booked a day ahead. The trust does not publish a start time, so ask locally.

Monsoon safety: dam releases and boating bans

Safety first in July–September. When the Omkareshwar Dam releases water, the river can rise fast. On 3 Sep 2025 the dam opened 10 gates, pilgrims were told to keep away from the ghats and boating was banned with immediate effect. In the monsoon, check for release alerts, obey sirens and announcements, and never bathe beyond the railings.

Indore to Omkareshwar by road and bus (77–80 km)

The road follows NH-347BG via Simrol, Bherughat, Barwaha and Mortakka. A four-lane section with three tunnels was 88% complete in May 2026 and is expected to open around Dec 2026; until then, allow 2–2.5 hours. For cab fares, see our tour page. The trust lists seven parking lots, and on festival days vehicles may be stopped outside town.

About 48–50 direct buses run each day; the first leaves around 2:15–3:45 AM and the last around 9:20 PM. Fares go from about ₹117 for a non-AC seat to about ₹700 for an AC sleeper, and the trip takes about 2 h 45 min. Check the Indore boarding point when you book.

Omkareshwar by train: what is running in 2026

Correction: trains to Omkareshwar stopped on 31 Jan 2023. That day the metre-gauge Mhow–Omkareshwar Road passenger made its last run so the line could be converted to broad gauge. Pages that still list trains to Omkareshwar Road are out of date.

The Mhow–Khandwa gauge conversion is now targeted for 2030, so there is no direct train from Indore or Ujjain. Take a train to Indore Jn (about 78–80 km away) or Khandwa Jn (72–77 km), then continue by road.

By air and by helicopter

Indore airport is 77–87 km away, about 2.5 hours by road. The PM Shri Heli Tourism Service began on 20 Nov 2025 with launch fares of ₹6,500 from Ujjain to Omkareshwar and ₹5,500 from Omkareshwar to Indore. Check current fares and flying days with the operator.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where is Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga located?

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is on Mandhata (Shivpuri) island in the Narmada, in Omkareshwar town, Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh. It is the fourth of the 12 jyotirlingas. The town is about 77–80 km from Indore, a 2–2.5 hour drive. Mamleshwar, traditionally considered its other half, stands across the river on the south bank.

  • What are the Omkareshwar temple timings?

Darshan runs from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM under the trust's official schedule. It pauses for three breaks: 12:20–1:15 PM (Madhyanha Bhog), 4:00–4:30 PM (evening shringar) and 9:30–10:00 PM (Shayan Aarti). The last window, Shayan Darshan, is 10:00–10:30 PM. Timings can change on festival days, so check the trust website first.

  • How much does Omkareshwar VIP darshan cost, and how do I book it?

The trust's Shighra (VIP) Darshan costs ₹300 per person for a 2-hour slot, booked the same day on the trust website or at the counter. Carry a printed ticket and photo ID, and collect a wristband at a collection point. Tickets are non-refundable and valid once. General darshan is free and needs no booking.

  • Is sparsh darshan allowed at Omkareshwar?

No. The trust's rules strictly prohibit touching the Shivling, so there is no sparsh darshan. Only water may be offered inside the sanctum, and priests perform abhishek at designated spots. There is no mandatory dress code, but modest clothing is recommended.

  • Are Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar both jyotirlingas? Which should I visit first?

Omkareshwar is the jyotirlinga. Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar), on the south bank, is traditionally considered its other half, from the stotram line "Omkāram Amaleśwaram", so pilgrims visit both. They are not two separate jyotirlingas. The order is a custom, not a rule, so plan it around your route and the temple's breaks.

  • Should I visit Mahakaleshwar or Omkareshwar first? Can I do both in one day?

There is no scriptural order, so plan by route and by the darshan slots you can get. Both in one day is possible but makes for a very long day of driving and queues, so two days is more comfortable. Our Ujjain Mahakal darshan guide and Ujjain–Omkareshwar tour page cover the circuit.

  • Is one day enough for Omkareshwar?

Yes. One day covers darshan at Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar, the ghats and a boat ride as a day trip from Indore. Allow 1.5–2 days if you also want the 7 km Omkar Parvat parikrama, an unhurried visit to the Statue of Oneness, or a side trip to Maheshwar.

  • What is the nearest railway station to Omkareshwar? Can I go by train?

No train runs to Omkareshwar. Omkareshwar Road station at Mortakka, 12–13 km away, has had no passenger trains since 31 Jan 2023, when the metre-gauge line closed for conversion, now targeted for 2030. Take a train to Indore Jn (about 78–80 km) or Khandwa Jn (72–77 km), then continue by road.

  • How do I go from Indore to Omkareshwar, and what is the bus fare?

Go by road. Omkareshwar is 77–80 km from Indore, about 2–2.5 hours by car on NH-347BG. Booking sites list about 48–50 direct buses a day, with fares from about ₹117 (non-AC) to about ₹700 (AC sleeper) and a journey of about 2 h 45 min. There is no train.

  • What is the Statue of Oneness, and what are the entry fee and timings?

The Statue of Oneness is a 108-ft bronze statue of Adi Shankaracharya as a 12-year-old boy, at Ekatma Dham on Omkar Parvat, unveiled on 21 Sep 2023. Entry is free. The official FAQ calls 10 AM–6 PM the ideal time to visit, but these are not formal hours. The Advaita Lok museum is still under construction.

  • How long is the Omkareshwar parikrama?

The Omkar Parvat parikrama is about 7 km and takes 2–2.5 hours on foot, passing Gauri Somnath, Kedareshwar and the Statue of Oneness. The trust runs a guided walk from 7 to 9 AM for ₹200 per person (₹500 for 2–5 people, ₹1,000 for 6–10); book a day ahead.

  • What is the boating fee in Omkareshwar?

There is no official fare list. Indicative prices are around ₹30–50 per person for a shared crossing and around ₹200 per person for a 1.5–2 hour round of the island. Agree the price before boarding and ask for life jackets. Boating can be stopped at short notice during dam releases.

  • Where can I stay in Omkareshwar?

The trust's Shreeji Vishramalaya, about 1 km from the temple, has dormitory beds at ₹100 per person for 24 hours; book a day ahead. MP Tourism's MPT Temple View has rooms around ₹700–3,290, and the town has private hotels. Book early for Mondays, Shravan and festival dates.

  • What is the best time to visit Omkareshwar?

October to March is the most comfortable season. Shravan (July–August) is the busiest, especially on Mondays. April–June is hot, and in July–September dam releases can close the ghats and stop boating. Upcoming festivals include Kartik Purnima (24 Nov 2026) and Mahashivratri (6 Mar 2027).
