The top places to visit in Indore are Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace, Khajrana Ganesh, Kanch Mandir and the Sarafa night food market. One day covers the old city and Sarafa; a second day adds 56 Dukan, a museum and Ralamandal, or a day trip to Ujjain. Avoid Mondays, when Lal Bagh and the Central Museum are shut. Indore is our home city (our office has been here since 2014), so this guide adds the timings, fees, distances and Metro details most lists skip. Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against MP Tourism and the Indore district website.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026. How we checked: no official list exists, so we compiled MP Tourism (Lal Bagh and museum figures, 2023–24), the district website and news reports. Distances are OpenStreetMap road km (Gomatgiri estimated). "Confirm locally" means no current official figure.
Rajwada Palace: the Holkar landmark
Rajwada is the seven-storey Holkar palace at the heart of the old city, begun in 1747 under Malhar Rao Holkar (MP Tourism) and completed in 1766. It burnt in 1984; the municipal corporation restored it from 2017 to 2023, and it reopened in Feb 2023. On 20 May 2025 the MP cabinet met inside, the first time since Independence.
We found no official notice of current hours or fee. Blogs report roughly 10 AM–5 PM, closed on Mondays, and ₹10–20 for Indians, all unverified, so check at the gate.
Old city walk: Kanch Mandir, Krishnapura Chhatris, Bada Ganpati and Gandhi Hall
- Kanch Mandir (Glass Temple): a Digambar Jain temple in Itwaria Bazaar, begun around 1903 by Sir Seth Hukumchand (district website). Its interior is all glass and mirror, reflecting three black-onyx Tirthankara idols endlessly. No photography inside. Listed hours conflict, so confirm locally.
- Krishnapura Chhatris: three domed Holkar cenotaphs from around 1849, with steps down to the Khan river about 500 m from Rajwada. Best at golden hour; we found no official hours or fee.
- Bada Ganpati: a Ganesh idol about 25 ft (8 m) tall, installed in 1875 and made, says MP Tourism, of brick, lime, fenugreek seed and soil from the seven mokshapuris. It is 2 km west, on Airport Road.
- Gandhi Hall: an Indo-Gothic town hall with a clock tower, 1.3 km away; view it from outside.

Lal Bagh Palace
Lal Bagh, the grandest Holkar palace, was built from 1886 to 1921 on 71.63 acres, with a gate copied from Buckingham Palace's at twice the size. The Holkars lived here until 1978, and the state acquired it in 1987, so it is a state museum, not an ASI site. The World Monuments Fund restored seven interior rooms, including the Crown Hall, and handed them over in Jul 2022.
MP Tourism (Jan 2023) lists 10 AM–5 PM, closed on Mondays and public holidays, at ₹20 for Indians and ₹400 for foreigners. There's no photography inside; an outdoor camera costs ₹270 and video ₹420, and you may have to deposit your phone. Recheck these 2023 figures.

Khajrana Ganesh Temple
Indore's most revered Ganesh temple is 6.2 km east of Rajwada. Tradition credits Ahilyabai Holkar with building it in 1735, though she ruled from 1767, so treat the date as tradition. The sanctum walls are silver-clad and the idol has diamond eyes.
The district website says crowds peak on Wednesdays and Sundays, so go on another weekday morning. Aartis are reported around 8 AM and 8 PM; confirm locally. Renovation work was reported in Aug–Sep 2026.

Annapurna Temple, Central Museum, Gomatgiri and Pitru Parvat
- Annapurna Temple: modelled on Madurai's Meenakshi temple, with a gopuram on four life-size elephants and, since a 2023 renovation, an 81-ft shikhara. It is 4 km south; go for the evening aarti.
- Central Museum: Gupta-to-Paramara Hindu and Jain sculpture in eight galleries at Navlakha, founded in the 1920s. MP Tourism (Feb 2024) lists 10 AM–5 PM, closed on Mondays and government holidays; ₹20 for Indians, ₹400 for foreigners, ₹250 for a camera, and free for under-15s.
- Gomatgiri: a hilltop Jain tirth with a 21-ft Bahubali modelled on Shravanabelagola's and 24 marble shrines, about 6 km from the airport. Go at sunset.
- Pitru Parvat: a hill park on Bijasan Road with a 72-ft seated ashtadhatu Hanuman, also good at sunset.

Parks: Meghdoot Garden and Pipliyapala Regional Park
Meghdoot Garden in Vijay Nagar has a musical fountain, best in the evening, and its own Metro station since 6 Sep 2026; we couldn't confirm its hours or fee. Pipliyapala Regional Park, opened by the Indore Development Authority in 2003, covers about 80 acres including a 42-acre lake, with boating, the 80-seat Malwa Queen cruiser and a musical fountain. Listings suggest about ₹25 per adult plus boating, with the fountain around 7–9 PM, both unverified.
Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary
Ralamandal, a sanctuary since 1989, covers about 5 km² of hill forest 12.7 km south-east of Rajwada, with a Holkar hunting lodge on the hilltop and trekking trails. Wildlife includes leopard, blackbuck, sambar, chital and nilgai, but no tigers, whatever older blogs say. Listings give 9 AM–6:30 PM and fees from ₹20 to ₹60 plus vehicle and safari charges; there's no official rate card, so confirm at the gate.
Patalpani and Tincha Falls (monsoon only)
Patalpani is a waterfall of about 300 ft (91 m) on the Choral river near Mhow, 30 km by road (MP Tourism says 33–35 km). It flows from July to about October and is almost dry in summer; entry was free in 2022. Tincha Falls, about 28 km south-east, drops into a deep gorge.
From 29 Sep 2026 the Patalpani–Kalakund heritage train runs five days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Free Press Journal). MP Tourism's 2022 timing (11:05 AM, train 52965) may have changed, so check before you go.

Gulawat Lotus Valley and Choral Dam
Gulawat Lotus Valley, 22.6 km north-west near Hatod, has lotus ponds on the Yashwant Sagar backwaters; MP Tourism recommends sunrise. Blooms are reported around November–February (unverified), so ask before driving out. Choral Dam, 39.5 km south-west, is a forest reservoir with boating and an MP Tourism resort. It was part of the 2022 monsoon closure, so the same rain checks apply.
Indore Food Guide: Sarafa Bazaar, 56 Dukan and What to Eat
Indore's two food streets work in shifts: 56 Dukan from breakfast, and Sarafa after the jewellers close. The stalls below are ones MP Tourism itself names.

Last verified 8 Oct 2026 against MP Tourism's food features. The garadu season is local knowledge. Stalls and hours change, especially at Sarafa.

Sarafa Bazaar timings and the 2025–26 rule changes
Sarafa, 300 m from Rajwada, is a jewellery market by day and a food street by night. Stalls open around 9 PM, when the jewellers close, and run until about 1–2 AM; it's busiest from 10 PM to midnight.
On 26 Nov 2025 the municipal corporation allowed only 80 traditional shops to trade, and only after 9 PM. One low-authority report says the High Court quashed that list on 23 Sep 2026; we couldn't confirm it, so check locally which stalls are running.
56 Dukan (Chappan Dukan)
56 Dukan in New Palasia, 3.9 km from Rajwada, has had 56 food shops since 1974. Indore Smart City rebuilt it in 2020 for about ₹4 crore as a no-vehicle street, and FSSAI rates it a "Clean Street Food Hub". Poha starts around 6–7 AM; after that, each shop keeps its own hours.

Why Indore Is Called India's Cleanest City
Indore was named India's cleanest city in seven straight Swachh Survekshan surveys, from 2017 to 2023; the 2023 title was shared with Surat. For 2024-25 the government created a Super Swachh League for repeat winners, and Indore topped its band for cities of over 10 lakh people. The awards were presented on 17 Jul 2025 (PIB).
Results of the 2025-26 survey were not out as of 8 Oct 2026; we'll update this page when they are. Don't confuse it with the separate clean-air ranking, Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan, where Lucknow beat Indore by one point in Sep 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is Indore famous for?
Indore is famous for its Holkar heritage, street food and cleanliness. Rajwada and Lal Bagh Palace are the Holkar landmarks, and Sarafa and 56 Dukan are the food streets. Khajrana Ganesh and the Kanch Mandir glass temple are the best-known shrines, and the city topped Swachh Survekshan seven years running (2017–2023).
What are the top 10 places to visit in Indore?
The top 10 are Rajwada, Sarafa Bazaar, Lal Bagh Palace, Khajrana Ganesh Temple, Kanch Mandir, 56 Dukan, the Krishnapura Chhatris, Bada Ganpati, Annapurna Temple and the Central Museum. All ten are within about 6 km of Rajwada, so one or two days covers them. In the monsoon, add Patalpani, but only when it is open.
Which is the mini Switzerland of Indore?
No place in Indore is officially called its "mini Switzerland"; we found no tourism, government or news source using the name. The only Indore-linked use we found is a traveller's caption for Hanuwantiya, an MP Tourism island resort about 140 km away. India's well-known "mini Switzerland" is Khajjiar in Himachal Pradesh, and Indore's own nickname is "Mini Bombay".
Is 1 day enough for Indore?
Yes, one day is enough for the old city and the food: Kanch Mandir, Rajwada, Bada Ganpati, Lal Bagh, Khajrana and Sarafa at night. It is not enough for Patalpani, Ralamandal or a day trip to Ujjain. Avoid Mondays if you can, when Lal Bagh and the Central Museum are closed, and Rajwada probably is too.
How should I spend 2 days in Indore?
Spend day one in the old city (Kanch Mandir, the Krishnapura Chhatris, Rajwada, Bada Ganpati and Lal Bagh), then Khajrana and Sarafa at night. On day two, do 56 Dukan, the Central Museum, Ralamandal or Patalpani and the Regional Park, or take a day trip to Ujjain, Mandu or Maheshwar.
What are the Sarafa Bazaar timings?
Sarafa's food stalls open around 9 PM, once the jewellery shops close, and run until about 1–2 AM; it is busiest from 10 PM to midnight. Entry is free. Since Nov 2025 night trading has been limited to 80 traditional shops, a rule a reported Sep 2026 court ruling may change, so check which stalls are open.
Which places in Indore are closed on Monday?
Lal Bagh Palace and the Central Museum close on Mondays and public holidays, according to MP Tourism, as many museums do. Rajwada is commonly reported closed on Mondays too, though we found no official notice. Temples such as Khajrana and Annapurna, the Krishnapura Chhatris and the food streets stay open.
Is it safe to visit Patalpani in the monsoon?
It can be, if the site is open and you stay behind the railings. Patalpani is best from July to October, but a flash flood swept away five visitors in Jul 2011, and the district often bans entry in heavy rain. Check local news or ask us first, and never bathe in the pool.
Does the Indore Metro go to Rajwada or the airport?
No, not yet. The Yellow Line runs from Gandhi Nagar to Radisson Square (16 stations, about 17 km, 9 AM–7 PM) and is handy for Meghdoot Garden and Vijay Nagar. It does not reach Rajwada, the railway station or the airport; that underground section is under construction, so use autos or cabs for the old city.
What are the best places to visit near Indore within 100 km?
The best picks within 100 km are Gulawat Lotus Valley (23 km), Tincha Falls (28 km), Patalpani (30 km), Choral Dam (40 km), Ujjain (about 55 km), Omkareshwar (77–80 km), Maheshwar (about 90–95 km) and Mandu (about 95–100 km). The waterfalls are for the monsoon only.
What are the best places to visit in Indore with family?
With family, pick Lal Bagh Palace, Pipliyapala Regional Park for boating and the musical fountain, Meghdoot Garden, the zoo, Khajrana Ganesh Temple, breakfast at 56 Dukan and sunset at Gomatgiri. Check the park and zoo hours locally; we could not verify them.
What is the best time to visit Indore?
October to March is the best time to visit Indore, at about 12–30 °C. July–September is the season for Patalpani and the other waterfalls, when they are open. Avoid April–June, when May averages a high of about 40 °C. Winter also brings garadu to Sarafa's stalls.
